Javakhk has passed a complicated and long historical path. This part of the present-day Georgia, according to the administrative territorial divisions of the country, now appears in the 1994 census. formed in the form of Samtskhe-Javakhk province and Tsalka region, which is part of another province bordering and neighboring the latter. Samtskhe-Javakhk province includes the former provinces of Akhaltskhai and Akhalkalak, which were divided into about 5 regions during the Soviet years. Samtskhe (Meskhunik, Akhaltskha province) part of Samtskhe-Javakhk province is currently divided into Adygen (area: 799.5 km2), Akhaltskha (1,010.3 km2), Aspindza (Aspnjak, 825.3 km2) regions.

The current Samtskhe-Javakhk province also includes the resort region of Borjom (1.189 km2), which is part of the former Gori province, however, only the 4 Armenian-inhabited villages in the south of the region have a historical-geographic connection with Javakhk.
